Pontassieve is the official destination of Stage 1 of the Via di Francesco. This medieval town is steeped in history, with evidence dating back to the Middle Ages when the Florentine republic built the castle of Sant’Angelo on the connecting roads with Romagna and the Casentino.
Today, Pontassieve is an important stop along the pilgrim trail, offering pilgrims a glimpse into its past as well as modern-day amenities.
Lodging in Pontassieve can be tight. Consider alternative end points of Compiobbi or Diacetto. Book first 1-2 stages before leaving Florence.
Stage 2 Accommodations
Pilgrims will cross the river Sieve via Pontassieve’s historic Medici bridge. Originally commissioned in the mid-16th century, the two-arch bridge was most recently restored in the 1950s following WWII.
