The origins of Santa Maria degli Angeli date back to 1216 when St. Francis built the church after experiencing a miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary. The church is named after St. Francis’ home in Assisi, and it represents the starting point around which the monastery complex was developed. Count Orlando of Chiusi donated the land to St. Francis on May 8, 1213, as a retreat for contemplation and solitude. The church was later enlarged in 1250 and consecrated in 1260. Today, the church stands as a testament to the deep spiritual connection between St. Francis and the Tuscan landscape, preserving its ancient history and captivating artistry.
