Culture & History

The history of Pomino can be traced back to the 11th century when the Guidi Counts owned the land, later donating some to the Camaldoli Hermitage. Over the centuries, the land was also owned by the Albizi family, the bishops of Fiesole, and the Frescobaldi family, who built the Pomino Castle in 1500.

The area’s geological conformation, characterized by marl and an exposed valley, has long been recognized for producing exceptional wines. In 1716, Grand Duke Cosimo III de’ Medici listed Pomino as one of Tuscany’s four most prized wine-producing territories. Pomino wines have received numerous awards, including a gold medal at the 1878 World’s Fair in Paris.
